Fixed expanders are highly effective tools for promoting growth of the dental arches. In our office, we use both upper and lower expanders to ensure balanced and sufficient expansion. This approach is especially helpful when myofunctional appliances alone are not enough to catch up arch development.
Fixed expanders are a great option for children ages 6 and older. Our typical goal is approximately 8 mm of expansion, which often leads to noticeable improvement in symptoms. We follow a slow and gentle expansion protocol to ensure your child remains comfortable throughout the process.
Once the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance remains in place for 4–6 months to stabilize the results. After that, we transition to a myofunctional appliance to continue guiding natural growth and development.
