How Long Does a Dental Implant Procedure Take?

Dental implants are a long-lasting and effective option for replacing missing teeth. While the surgery itself is relatively quick, the entire dental implant process typically takes 3 to 9 months. This allows time for your jawbone to heal and securely fuse with the implant, creating a strong foundation for your new tooth.

Although the timeline may seem lengthy, each stage is essential.

The Dental Implant Timeline

Consultation

Your dental implant journey begins with a consultation, which usually takes about an hour. During this appointment, your dentist will:

  • Examine your teeth and gums

  • Take X-rays

  • Discuss your treatment goals

  • Determine whether you need a tooth extraction or bone graft before implant placement

From there, your dentist will create a personalized treatment plan.

Tooth Extraction or Bone Grafting

Some patients require additional procedures before receiving a dental implant. If you need a tooth extracted or a bone graft to strengthen your jawbone, these treatments typically add 3 to 4 months of healing time before the implant can be placed.

Implant Surgery

The implant surgery itself is surprisingly quick. Each implant generally takes 30 to 60 minutes to place.

During the procedure, your dentist will:

  1. Numb the treatment area with local anesthesia

  2. Make a small opening in the gums

  3. Carefully place the titanium implant into the jawbone

  4. Close the gums to begin the healing process

Most patients return home shortly after the procedure.

Osseointegration

The longest phase of treatment is called osseointegration, when the jawbone naturally fuses with the titanium implant.

This healing process usually takes 3 to 6 months and is what gives dental implants their exceptional strength and stability.

Abutment and Crown Placement

Once the implant has fully integrated with your jawbone, your dentist will attach the abutment, the small connector that supports the replacement tooth.

After your gums heal over the next 2 to 3 weeks, your custom dental crown is attached, completing your smile restoration.
