Are all cavities visible on X-ray?
Digital X-rays have greatly improved dental care throughout the years. They help patients have better oral health every day. However, while X-rays pinpoint most cavities, some may still slip through the cracks.
X-ray Limitations
Unfortunately, X-rays have some limits. There are a few reasons why dental X-rays may miss some cavities:
The cavity may be too small. If a cavity’s damage is insignificant enough, it may be undetectable.
The cavity may be behind a previous filling, which can block a cavity from being accurately X-rayed.
If a patient has overlapping teeth, cavities can hide between them.
Cavities may be on the gumline or biting surfaces.
Detecting Cavities Without X-rays
Proper and consistent brushing and flossing can also keep cavities and other problems at bay.
New cavities can develop at any time, so visiting the dentist regularly is important. Most dentists recommend getting new X-rays every 6-18 months. In addition to X-rays, a dentist might use probing or visual inspection to detect cavities at a cleaning appointment.
Patients can also look for signs of existing or developing cavities and bring them to their dentist’s attention at their next appointment. Signs of cavity or decay include:
Visible pits or holes
Sensitivity to hot or cold
Pain when biting down
Black, brown, or white stains
