How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

How long a root canal treatment will take depends on a few factors. On average the procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes, and they can take up to 90 minutes for more complex cases. Some root canal treatments need just one appointment to complete, and some will require two appointments.

The time needed for your root canal treatment depends on:

1. How many roots the tooth has.

During a root canal treatment, your dentist carefully removes the pulp from each of your tooth’s roots. Different types of teeth have different numbers of roots. Molars can have up to four roots, premolars have one or two roots, and canines and incisors have just one root. It takes time to remove the pulp from each root so the more roots the tooth has the longer it will take.

2. If your tooth needs medication to kill off the infection.

After the pulp is removed from the roots, your dentist may need to fill the chamber with a medication to completely eradicate the infection. If this is the case, you will need to return for another appointment after the infection is completely gone.

3. If your tooth requires a dental crown after the procedure.

Some teeth may be especially prone to damage or cracking after a root canal treatment because the inner supportive part of the tooth has been removed. If your tooth is fragile after the treatment, your dentist will place a crown over the tooth to protect it, which will require an additional appointment.
