How urgent is a cavity?

Cavities develop when bacteria break down the tooth’s enamel and create small holes. While early-stage cavities are not considered emergencies, they should still be treated promptly to prevent further damage. If left untreated, cavities can lead to more serious issues as they infect the sensitive inner layers of the teeth, which can then become a painful, urgent problem.

When is a Cavity an Emergency?

Seek dental care immediately if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Pus or swelling. These symptoms indicate an infection, which requires prompt attention from a dental professional.

  • A severe toothache. If a cavity reaches the nerve or pulp, it can cause an infection or an abscess and cause an intense toothache.

  • Severe tooth sensitivity. If you experience sensitivity when eating cold or hot foods, or sugary or acidic foods, it may be a sign that the cavity has progressed to the inner layers.

If your cavity has reached emergency status, contact your dentist promptly and set an emergency appointment. Try to manage your pain in the meantime with over-the-counter medication, a cold compress, or swishing warm salt water until the appointment.
